Dutch Girl Donuts - 19000 Woodward Ave Detroit, MI 48203
Well, they’ve been back and we’ve been eating them and we couldn’t be happier or unhealthier about it! The definition we found for a donut is as follows:
Dough·nut
/ˈdōnət/
noun: donut a small fried cake of sweetened dough, typically in the shape of a ball or ring.
Where’s the romance in that?! The universe, in all its complexity bestows unto us this glorious form of sustenance and we define it like that?! Poor form, poor form.
Anyway, back to Dutch Girl Donuts and that timeless, classic shop shining spectacularly on Woodward Ave. in Detroit. Who cares that it was gone for a blink - we don’t even need to mention that. Oh wait, well nevermind.
Located at 19000 Woodward Ave in Detroit, this nostalgic beacon for locals and visitors alike, offers a taste of tradition since its reopening under new ownership in 2024. The shop's menu boasts classic varieties like glazed, cake doughnuts, and custard-filled, alongside new creations like a red velvet doughnut ice cream collaboration with Ray's Ice Cream. This iconic establishment's history traces back to 1947, when it was first opened by the Timmer family, embodying a piece of Detroit's culinary heritage. Despite changes in ownership, the commitment to original recipes ensures that each bite carries the legit tastes of yesteryears, even with new innovative flavors dropping. Dutch Girl Donuts not only serves as a treat hub but also as a cultural landmark, where the past and present of Detroit's food scene deliciously intersect.
The history of Dutch Girl is rich; after facing closure and damages, it was brought back to life by Paddy Lynch, who not only restored the physical shop but also the spirit of the original donut-making art. Today, patrons can enjoy staples like the Bavarian cream doughnut or venture into the new sprinkle doughnut, showcasing a blend of tradition and creativity. This donut destination isn't just about the food; it's about community, nostalgia, and the heart of Detroit's culinary identity.
